A violent attack by the radical Kalakato (Kala Kato) religious sect in Funtua, Katsina State. The attackers assaulted a local village head (a traditional ruler) and burnt down a police vehicle. The sect members went on a rampage, leading to the deaths of an estimated 50 people and the widespread destruction of properties. This sect has been described as a Quranist movement that rejects the authority of the Hadith and is known for its anti-establishment and militant stance.

Gideon Akaluka, an Igbo Christian trader, was beheaded while in police custody. Akaluka had been arrested following allegations that his wife had used pages of the Quran as toilet paper for their baby. While he was being held at the Goron Dutse Prison (or a nearby police station, accounts vary) for his own "protection," a mob of radicalized youths scaled the prison walls, overpowered the guards, beheaded him, and paraded his severed head on a spike through the streets of Kano.
