A violent civilian protest erupted in Kano after a commercial motorcyclist, Mustapha Sani, was shot dead by soldiers at a military checkpoint outside a bus terminus. The soldiers alleged that the rider had failed to stop for a routine search. In response, around 100 protesters, primarily commercial motorcyclists and local youths, took over the Silver Jubilee Roundabout (also known as Jubilee Square) in the city centre. The mob marched through the streets, burned tyres, and pelted soldiers with stones, demanding the dismantling of all military checkpoints in the city. The soldiers on duty drove away in two military vans to avoid further clashes, making no attempt to stop the protesters.

Armed Muslims attacked the town of Yelwa in Plateau State, with the most brutal assault concentrated on a church compound where worshippers had sought refuge. The attackers, described as a well-armed gang wearing black overalls and using sophisticated weapons including automatic rifles, pursued Christians to the Church of Christ in Nigeria (COCIN) compound and killed them. At least 48 people were killed inside the church compound itself, with the total death toll from the day's attacks exceeding 75 Christians. Several churches were destroyed or damaged, including the COCIN church, the Evangelical Church of West Africa (ECWA), and a United Church of Christ in Nigeria (UCCN/HEKAN)
