A violent confrontation erupted between followers of the radical Islamic Maitatsine (Yan Tatsine) sect and the Nigeria Police Force. The riot was sparked after police arrested 16 sect members for preaching without a licence and attempted to search their buildings; the zealots resisted, and the violence spread. The sect members, armed with improvised weapons, attacked police reinforcements, leading to a massive police counter-offensive.

A female Christian student of the Federal Government Girls College (FGGC) in Kazaure, Jigawa State, allegedly insulted the Prophet Muhammad during an argument with Muslim classmates. Tensions simmered for over a month as some Muslims publicly called for the student to be punished. On the evening of 18 November, a group of youths marched on the school to demand she be handed over. Anti-riot police and the Emir of Kazaure arrived to prevent mob justice, but a policeman fired a shot, dispersing the crowd. The youths then went on a rampage, burning churches, homes, and shops. The violence, which lasted several hours, was contained by police.

The Zangon‑Kataf conflict escalated sharply when Kataf (Atyap) militias launched a major attack on Hausa‑Fulani settlements in and around Zangon‑Kataf town, killing scores of people in what became one of the deadliest single days of the crisis.
