In a precision home-invasion style hit, two Boko Haram gunmen riding a motorcycle approached a residential compound in Damaturu, Yobe State. They knocked on the door of a police officer’s home. The moment the officer answered, they shot him dead before fleeing on their motorcycle. The officer lived in a compound with eight other policemen, but the attackers singled him out, indicating the killing was premeditated. The attack was part of the group’s wider strategy to eliminate security personnel in their domestic spaces, thereby removing any sense of off-duty safety.

In the preceding months, the group had carried out multiple assassinations of police officers in Borno and Yobe states, including the 4 September 2011 killing of a police inspector in Maiduguri and the 7 June 2011 coordinated attacks on police stations in Maiduguri. The tactics employed – two gunmen on a motorcycle, a knock on the door, a point-blank shooting, and a swift escape – had become a signature Boko Haram method, honed through repeated use since mid-2011. The attack also foreshadowed the larger, more coordinated assaults on police infrastructure that would culminate in the 20 January 2012 “Kano Blitz”.

A group of approximately 20 suspected Boko Haram gunmen launched a coordinated attack on Mainok village, a town under Kaga Local Government Area along the Maiduguri-Damaturu-Kano road. Four gunmen, initially thought to be visitors or guests arriving for the Jumat (Friday) prayers, entered the home of retired Major General Mamman Shuwa. They opened fire on the General and his guests. One of the guests died on the spot, while General Shuwa died on the way to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.
