Gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram militants shot dead a Christian couple and their child as they left a church in the Gwange area of Maiduguri, Borno State.
As Governor Kashim Shettima was returning to Maiduguri from Abuja, his motorcade was targeted by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) followed by gunfire. The blast occurred on the Airport Road in Maiduguri. The governor’s convoy was travelling from the Maiduguri airport to the Government House when the IED detonated. According to police, the device was a “canister” that exploded near a patrol vehicle in the motorcade but did not hit its intended target. Borno State Police Commissioner Simeon Midenda stated, “There was a blast targeted at one of our vehicles, but it did not hit its target. It was a mild explosion. Nobody was killed or injured”.
Following days of intense urban warfare during the first major Boko Haram uprising, the group’s founder and spiritual leader, Mohammed Yusuf, was captured by the Nigerian Army. He was reportedly found hiding in a goat pen at his parents‑in‑law’s house, with a wound to his arm that had already been treated. Yusuf was transferred to the custody of the Nigeria Police Force at their headquarters in Maiduguri, where he was interrogated. Shortly after the transfer, Yusuf was killed while in police custody. Although authorities initially claimed that he was shot while trying to escape, a video later emerged showing him under interrogation while in handcuffs before being executed in a public manner.
