Armed Attack NNG0407

A large convoy of Boko Haram militants, heavily armed with AK-47 rifles and petrol bombs, attacked Gumsuri from two directions. They began by shooting and killing men and older boys, often in front of their families. The attackers then rounded up women, children, and young men, loading them onto trucks. They burned down about half of the village, including homes, shops, and a government medical center, using petrol bombs.

Trajectory

The Gumsuri attack followed the devastating template Boko Haram had perfected by late 2014: a two‑pronged assault on a remote village at night, the execution of the male population, the burning of homes, and the mass abduction of women and children. The attack was the latest in a string of mass kidnappings that began with the April 2014 Chibok schoolgirl abduction and would continue in February 2015 with the assault on Kumshe, among others. The destruction of communication towers also delayed the news for four days, a tactic Boko Haram used to isolate its victims and prevent a rapid military response.

Cycle notes

This attack mirrored earlier coordinated raids by Boko Haram, such as the Sandiya massacre on 23 November 2013 and the Izghe attack on 15 February 2014. These incidents reflect a recurring tactic involving multi-directional assaults characterized by mass killings, large-scale abductions, and systematic arson. The Gumsuri attack also foreshadowed later mass abduction operations, including the infamous kidnapping of schoolgirls in Chibok in April 2014. This illustrates the evolving strategy of organized population capture alongside the destruction of villages as a core element of the insurgency.

Mass abduction and gender selective killing
