ISWAP terrorists, aided by local informants and sympathisers, attacked a military base in Kumuya, a village on the border of Borno and Yobe states and the hometown of former Army Chief Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai. The attack occurred when the Special Forces of the 27 Task Force Brigade, stationed at Buni Gari, had left for a clearing patrol. The insurgents stormed the Kumuya community, attacked villagers, and then descended on the base using heavy weapons, destroying equipment. They patrolled the area to prevent reinforcement, overwhelming the troops left behind. The base was set on fire, and troops on the ground were forced to withdraw in disarray. Following the attack, the military restricted movement along the Damaturu-Damboa-Biu road.
