At approximately 9:49 pm, three suicide bombers — a male and two females — attempted to infiltrate the Usmanti Community in Mafa Local Government Area via the Simari area. They were sighted by vigilant members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), who quickly alerted joint security personnel deployed in the area. As the bombers were chased, a stampede ensued. In the resulting chaos and in an attempt to escape arrest, the three bombers hurriedly detonated the Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) strapped to their bodies, killing themselves instantly. Two members of the CJTF sustained injuries from the blast and were rushed to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital for treatment. An eyewitness reported that soldiers first shot the male bomber, causing his IED to detonate; the powerful blast then triggered the explosives strapped to the two female bombers, killing all three.

Trajectory
By August 2017, the CJTF had become highly adept at spotting human profiles in the scrubland, forcing bombers into desperation detonations before they could reach markets or mosques.
Cycle notes
Mirrored earlier attacks by Boko Haram including the 07 February 2017 interception of female bombers near the NNPC Mega Station, the 04 July 2016 Monguno attempted bombing where female bombers were shot and detonated, the 11 November 2016 interception and detonation of female bombers by a patrol team, the 17 July 2017 multiple bomber interceptions across Maiduguri perimeter zones, the 11 July 2017 Molai checkpoint interception, and the 26 June 2017 attempted bombings at the University of Maiduguri, collectively reflecting a recurring pattern of foiled infiltration attempts leading to premature or self-detonation upon detection, where Boko Haram operatives—often female—convert interception into immediate attack to ensure operational impact even when missions fail, while also highlighting gradual improvements in local surveillance and rapid response by security and CJTF forces.
