Socioeconomic drivers
By inflicting double-digit fatalities, the group aims to force the military to withdraw from smaller outposts into larger, more defensive hubs, leaving the rural population unprotected.
Trajectory
This phase was characterized as sustained pressure. Following the sentry-plucking event on December 9th, the attack on December 10th revealed that the insurgents were employing a Two-Stage Operation. The first stage involved testing the reaction time on Day 1, while the second stage involved striking the weakened point with a massed force on Day 2.
Cycle notes
Mirrors earlier Boko Haram attacks including the 21 April 2015 Baga ambush on military positions, 15 November 2016 Bita–Piridang combined IED and gunfire attack, 29 January 2017 Maiduguri–Damboa convoy ambush, 9 February 2017 Ajiri–Dikwa road assault on troop movements, and 20 June 2017 convoy engagement targeting security escorts, reflecting a recurring shift toward mobile, intelligence-driven harassment of military forces along forest corridors linking Sambisa and Alagarno, aimed at disrupting troop logistics, inflicting attritional losses, capturing resources, and gradually undermining state control over contested rural terrain.
