The terrorists stormed the 3 Battalion, 7 Division unit at about 6:00 p.m. and engaged soldiers in a firefight that lasted for five hours . The attackers initially overpowered the troops and reportedly made away with an Armoured Personnel Carrier and a military truck . The attack occurred near a camp housing tens of thousands of displaced persons, and humanitarian workers were caught in the crossfire.

Cycle notes
MIrrored earlier Boko Haram attacks including the 5 January 2015 Monguno military base assault, the 21 April 2015 Baga base overrun, the 9 December 2017 Damboa attack on soldiers, the 10 December 2017 coordinated follow-up assault on a Damboa military formation, and the 25 November 2018 Metele base attack (later but tactically similar), reflecting a recurring pattern of large-scale, coordinated assaults on remote military bases using heavy weapons and gun trucks to overwhelm isolated garrisons, seize military hardware, and extend attacks toward nearby humanitarian hubs to disrupt aid operations and assert dominance over border areas.
