Eighteen insurgents on foot attacked the military base in the Cashew Plantation area using mortars and guns, resulting in a prolonged battle. Additionally, seven suicide bombers targeted civilians in nearby villages by detonating IEDs among residents who had fled their homes due to the gunfire. In a separate attempt at infiltration, attackers tried to climb over the defensive trench dug around Maiduguri to prevent such incursions.

Socioeconomic drivers

Boko Haram’s attempt to demonstrate continued operational capability and undermine Nigerian military presence near the state capital.

Trajectory

Boko Haram continued asymmetric warfare with direct assaults on military installations combined with civilian targeting, aiming to stretch security forces and regain psychological momentum.

Cycle notes

Mirrored earlier Boko Haram attacks including the 31 January 2018 Dalori IDP camp suicide bombing involving multiple female bombers, the 2 March 2018 Fulatari mosque suicide attack targeting worshippers, the 17 January 2018 Muna Garage market suicide bombing in Maiduguri, the 26 September 2017 Dikwa mosque bombing targeting civilians during prayer, and the 10 July 2017 coordinated female suicide attacks in Maiduguri outskirts, collectively reflecting a recurring pattern in which Boko Haram deployed multiple female, often teenage, suicide bombers in coordinated strikes against densely populated civilian settlements near Maiduguri to maximize casualties, overwhelm security response, and sustain psychological pressure on displaced and vulnerable communities.
