Armed Attack Coordinated Armed Attack NNG0572

A large group of heavily armed Boko Haram insurgents, riding in utility vehicles and on motorcycles, launched a rare urban incursion into Maiduguri, attempting to reach Giwa Barracks. The attackers used rocket-propelled grenades and artillery, engaging security forces in a two-hour gun battle. Troops, supported by the Air Task Force, police, NSCDC, and Civilian JTF, repelled the attack and pursued fleeing insurgents. After the main assault, a suicide bomber hiding in a tree attacked an armoured van of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS) as it returned from the operation, injuring two police officers and damaging the vehicle.

Socioeconomic drivers

Boko Haram’s deliberate targeting of civilians and security forces in the Borno capital to punish perceived government collaborators and demonstrate continued reach.

Trajectory

By late April 2018, after major territorial losses, Boko Haram had fully shifted to asymmetric urban suicide attacks in Maiduguri as a low-cost way to maintain pressure and media visibility.

Cycle notes

Mirrored earlier Boko Haram attacks including 16 February 2017 – multi-phase Maiduguri attack combining armed assault and infiltration, 07 June 2017 – coordinated multi-point suicide and armed assault on Maiduguri (Jiddari Polo axis), 20 June 2017 – convoy ambush exploiting movement vulnerabilities near the city, 25 July 2017 – Barno Yasu ambush involving heavy weapons and coordinated assault, and 10 December 2017 – Damboa military base attack using massed firepower, collectively reflecting a recurring pattern in which Boko Haram conducts complex, multi-stage operations that blend direct urban assaults with follow-on suicide attacks, aiming to penetrate fortified city perimeters, test military response capacity, and sustain psychological pressure on strategic centers like Maiduguri despite territorial losses.
