Nine Nigerian soldiers were killed in a gunfight with Boko Haram jihadists near the town of Baga, Borno State, on the shores of Lake Chad. The soldiers were returning from a mass burial of 40 farmers killed by ISWAP militants on 12 January in Dumba when the firefight erupted late on Tuesday. According to two military officers who spoke to AFP, seven soldiers died on the spot, while two others later succumbed to their injuries in hospital. One soldier was wounded, and five others remained missing following the clash. It was unclear whether Boko Haram suffered any casualties. The clash occurred as Boko Haram had given permission to residents to bury the dead bodies of farmers killed by rival ISWAP militants, anticipating an ISWAP attack on the funeral.
ISWAP fighters launched a multi-pronged assault on the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) HQ and the Naval Base at Mile 3 and Mile 4. After a "ding-dong" battle, the military withdrew. ISWAP fighters entered Baga and Doron Baga, hoisting their flags and specifically reassuring civilians that they were only there to fight the "infidel" government, a stark contrast to Shekau's 2015 methods.
In the early hours of the morning, Boko Haram gunmen arrived on ten motorcycles and attacked Wumbi village. They opened fire indiscriminately, startling residents from their sleep, and then set homes ablaze while looting food supplies. The assault resulted in the deaths of two civilians and compelled hundreds of residents to flee across the river into neighboring Cameroon.
