Socioeconomic drivers

ISWAP’s strategy of using concealed ambush tactics to target returning military convoys and disrupt clearance operations.

Trajectory

By mid-2020, ISWAP had refined highly effective concealment ambushes (using foliage cover) along patrol routes as a low-cost asymmetric tactic to inflict heavy casualties and erode troop morale after territorial losses.

Cycle notes

Mirrored earlier insurgent attacks including 31 May 2018 – Pridang–Bitta road ambush combining IED detonation with follow-on attack, 18 July 2019 – Jakana ambush targeting a military patrol with a subsequent base assault, 30 August 2019 – Gasarwa convoy ambush using RPGs and heavy weapons, 25 September 2019 – Gubio convoy ambush involving close-range engagement, and 23 March 2020 – Goneri (the Gorge) ambush causing high military casualties, collectively reflecting a recurring pattern in which Islamic State West Africa Province executes well-concealed, close-range ambushes on returning military convoys—leveraging terrain masking (such as foliage cover) to achieve surprise, overwhelm troops, and inflict significant casualties while disrupting ongoing clearance and patrol operations in northeastern Nigeria.
