Ambush NNG0705

Fighters from the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) ambushed a Nigerian military convoy travelling from Monguno to Maiduguri. The insurgents used a combination of roadside bombs (IEDs) and rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) to stop the convoy before opening fire with heavy weaponry. According to military sources, the jihadists detonated between seven and eight IEDs planted along the road as the convoy drove past. The ambush was one of the deadliest assaults on the Nigerian Army in 2021, coming just weeks after ISWAP consolidated its position in the northeast following the death of rival Boko Haram commander Abubakar Shekau in May

Cycle notes

This incident directly mirrored the 30 August 2019 – Gasarwa convoy ambush involving RPG fire and coordinated roadside attack, 18 July 2019 – Jakana ambush targeting troops along a key Maiduguri access route, 06 July 2020 – Maiduguri–Damboa road IED attack disrupting military movement, 25 April 2021 – Mainok ambush targeting a military resupply convoy prior to base assault, and multiple 2020–2021 incidents involving roadside IED deployment along major transit corridors, collectively reflecting a recurring operational pattern in which Islamic State West Africa Province conducts complex ambushes on military convoys using layered explosive devices and direct fire to maximize casualties and disrupt troop mobility.
