The economic dimension of the insurgency, with insurgents stealing livestock and valuables alongside abductions.
Trajectory
The abduction of two women in Mairari reflected the persistence of gender‑targeted abductions by Boko Haram in Borno State. The incident occurred against a backdrop of ongoing insurgent activities in Konduga LGA, which had seen repeated attacks and abductions. The inability of the police crack team to rescue the victims underscored the challenges faced by security forces in operating in insurgent‑affected areas.
Cycle notes
The abduction of two women in Mairari directly echoed the 14–15 April 2014 Chibok schoolgirls abduction and the 19 February 2018 Dapchi schoolgirls abduction, both of which involved the mass kidnapping of women and girls by Boko Haram – all part of a sustained pattern of gender‑targeted abductions by the insurgency. The method – invading a home, abducting women, and stealing livestock and valuables – mirrored the 2021 abduction of women in Konduga LGA, where similar tactics were employed. The police response – deploying a crack team that failed to locate the victims – reflected the pattern seen in the 14–15 April 2014 Chibok abduction and the 20 April 2021 Greenfield University kidnapping, where security forces were unable to rescue abductees. The incident occurred in Konduga LGA, a known insurgent hotspot that had seen repeated attacks throughout the insurgency, including the 11 August 2013 Konduga mosque massacre and the 30 January 2016 Dalori massacre, confirming the area as a persistent flashpoint.
