An ISWAP suicide bomber drove an explosives-laden vehicle concealed in thick foliage into a convoy of advancing Nigerian troops in the Timbuktu Triangle, a notorious hotspot for ISWAP activity spanning the Borno-Yobe border. The troops were on an offensive targeting ISWAP militants in the area. The VBIED (Vehicle-Borne Improvised Explosive Device) rammed into the convoy, killing dozens of soldiers instantly and wounding many others. The blast was so powerful that it scattered shrapnel over a wide area. The attack was not on a static military base but occurred during an offensive maneuver in the Timbuktu Triangle, which has a challenging terrain and is a key ISWAP stronghold.

Cycle notes
Mirrored earlier insurgent attacks including 23 March 2020 – Goneri (the Gorge) ambush involving secondary detonation of military explosives, 17 January 2021 – Gorgi multi-IED field attack against armored convoy, 07 January 2020 – Monguno infiltration attack involving a vehicle-borne explosion, 09 January 2021 – Gazagana convoy ambush disrupting reinforcement movement, and 05 April 2024 – Buratai–Buni Gari ambush on advancing troops, collectively reflecting a recurring pattern in which Islamic State West Africa Province deploys vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices (VBIEDs) against maneuvering military units—particularly during offensive operations—to maximize casualties, disrupt momentum, and exploit terrain advantages in strongholds like the Timbuktu Triangle, highlighting an evolution toward more sophisticated, high-impact asymmetric warfare tactics in northeastern Nigeria.
