The attack was part of a larger, coordinated assault on multiple villages across Danmusa, Dutsinma, and Safana LGAs between 12:30 a.m. and 3:00 a.m. on 18 April 2020, which killed a total of 47 people. According to Katsina Police Command spokesman SP Gambo Isah, the violence escalated after a local Yan Sakai vigilante group "started setting ablaze some Fulani settlements at Aibon Mangwaro village" following an initial repelled attack on Kurechi village.
