At approximately 2 am on Friday, dozens of gunmen (estimated at about 100) on motorcycles and in Hilux vehicles, after first attacking a nearby military checkpoint, stormed the Government Girls Secondary School (GGSS) in Jangebe, Zamfara State. They broke into the dormitories and ordered students to come out, shooting sporadically to spread fear. They herded the girls out, forced them to walk for miles through thorny bushes and across a river, and led them into a forest. A police officer, Sgt Hamza Sulaiman (a signal expert), was killed 400 metres from the school during the operation.
