A large, multi-pronged ISWAP force staged an attack on a Nigerian Army convoy and base in Mainok, Borno State. The operation was carried out in several phases. First, the militants ambushed a military convoy transporting newly acquired weapons to Maiduguri, using their own MRAPs and rocket-propelled grenades to overwhelm the escort, seizing weapons and two MRAPs. They then divided into three groups: one group stormed and overran the 156 Task Force Battalion base, destroying a T-55 battle tank and a BTR-4EN, and setting it on fire; a second group set up an ambush on the Damaturu road, killing three soldiers and injuring nine others; a third group did the same on the Jakana-Mainok road. When the military called in air support, a NAF fighter jet, operating with flawed intelligence and unable to distinguish between friendly forces and insurgents dressed in similar military camouflage, mistakenly bombed a gun truck carrying troops on a reinforcement mission, killing 20 soldiers. The insurgents withdrew, setting fire to the local police station in a rage before fleeing to their camp around the Lawan Mainari axis.
