In a coordinated multi-target assault, Boko Haram insurgents attacked a divisional police station and two commercial banks in Saminaka, a key town on the road between Kaduna and Jos. The attackers used IEDs to breach the security of the banks and the police station, engaging in a firefight to suppress local law enforcement while they looted the financial institutions.
In a coordinated overnight assault, a large group of about 30 heavily armed gunmen attacked the Divisional Police Headquarters and Area Command, as well as three commercial banks in Wukari, Taraba State. The attackers used large quantities of explosives to breach the banks’ strong rooms and also targeted the police facilities. A fierce gun battle between the police and the assailants lasted for several hours. According to police reports, three persons—a police inspector and two civilians—were killed during the exchange of fire, though other sources reported a higher casualty count of five. The attackers were repelled before they could gain access to the police armoury, and no weapons were stolen.
Just before 7:00 pm, at the start of the nighttime curfew imposed after the 20 January “Kano Blitz”, a group of gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram militants attacked the Rijiyar Zaki police station in the Ungogo Local Government Area of Kano city. The assailants arrived on motorcycles and in an all-terrain van, opened fire on the police station for several minutes, and shouted “Allahu Akbar”. Two policemen were feared dead, lying in pools of blood. The attack was brief, lasting no more than five minutes.
