The Benue State Police Command, through Police Public Relations Officer SP Udeme Edet, confirmed the incident and stated that the students were not direct targets of the military . Edet clarified that the military team was returning from patrol when they sighted hoodlums with firearms on a motorcycle, and in the process of chasing them, stray bullets hit the students . He added that an investigation is ongoing . A military officer who spoke anonymously confirmed that three students were hit by bullets from the criminals and were receiving treatment at the hospital . The Nigerian Army in Benue had yet to issue an official statement at the time of reporting .
