The victim was later evacuated to the General Hospital, Monguno, where he was confirmed dead by a medical officer . His remains were deposited at the hospital mortuary for autopsy and later released to relatives for burial according to Islamic rites . Security forces and volunteers have intensified efforts to track down those responsible for the attack .

Armed pastoralists from neighboring Kogi and Taraba states attacked the farming village of Udeni Gida in Nasarawa State. The attackers besieged the village, opened fire on unsuspecting villagers, and burned scores of houses and crops. The violence was a direct reprisal for a clash on 6 December 2009, when a herdsman led his cattle into a rice field, resulting in the death of a farmer. Police who had been deployed after the initial clash were withdrawn a few days before the 18 December attack, believing the fighting was over.
