A group of armed men, suspected to be Boko Haram terrorists, launched a midnight assault on a military base in Gujba town. They attacked two military patrol vehicles in a heavy shooting, killing one soldier and torching the vehicles. The attackers were later repelled by troops, who chased them into the surrounding bush
Gunmen entered multiple mosques in Kukawa town and shot men as they prayed before breaking the Ramadan fast, then attacked nearby homes and shot women preparing the evening meal. NPR According to an anonymous senior government official, the militants specifically targeted mosques they believed taught a form of Islam that was too moderate. After killing dozens of people in the mosques — mainly men and boys — the gunmen entered nearby houses and killed many of the inhabitants, including women and children.
Boko Haram fighters, dressed in military uniforms and driving vehicles painted in army colors, approached the base from Gubio in neighboring Borno State. The soldiers at the base, expecting reinforcements from their colleagues in Gubio, mistook the attackers for friendly troops and opened the gates. Once inside, the insurgents launched a fierce attack. The soldiers tried to fight back but were overwhelmed by the attackers' superior firepower, which included anti-aircraft guns, while the troops were limited to AK-47 rifles and unreliable machine guns.
