A joint security team—comprising personnel from the Nigerian Army, Nigeria Police, Kaduna State Vigilance Service (KADVS), and local hunters—was ambushed by armed Bandits along the Kuzuntu axis of Anchau, Kubau LGA. The team had been assigned to escort local officials and staff from an agro‑industry company to measure the Kuzuntu Grazing Reserve, following a request from the Kubau LGA Chairman. The measurement exercise was completed successfully; however, on the return leg, the team was intercepted. A heavy firefight ensued. Police Constable Sunday Ishaya was fatally shot. Several military personnel sustained injuries. The injured were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment, where PC Ishaya was confirmed dead. His remains were deposited at the General Hospital, Ikara. The injured personnel were reported to be responding to treatment.

Socioeconomic drivers
The Kuzuntu axis sits within a network of forest reserves (including the Anchau West and Kona reserves) that provide perfect concealment for Bandits groups to launch hit-and-run attacks on government officials.
Trajectory
By late 2025, Banditry in Kaduna shifted from purely criminal abductions to territorial pushback. Attacks on officials surveying land (like the agro-industry staff in this incident) suggest that Bandits are actively trying to prevent government "reclamation" of forest lands where they have established camps.
Cycle notes
The ambush echoes the 2021–2022 wave of attacks on grazing reserve demarcation teams in Zamfara and Katsina states, where Bandits similarly targeted surveyors and security escorts to frustrate state intervention in rural land governance. However, this incident differs in its execution: the attackers allowed the measurement exercise to be completed before striking on the return leg—a tactic designed to maximise casualties after the team’s guard was lowered. This mirrors classic insurgent “open‑leg” ambush tactics used by ISWAP in the North‑East and, more recently, by Bandits in the North‑West. The pattern of striking during the return leg indicates a learning curve: Bandits have studied security force protocols and adapted their ambush timing accordingly.

In a coordinated strike on a day of high security alert, Boko Haram insurgents ambushed a military patrol vehicle tasked with delivering food supplies to soldiers stationed at an urban checkpoint. The attackers used an IED to disable or distract the vehicle before opening fire. During the intense crossfire between the military and the insurgents, several civilians in the vicinity were caught in the line of fire.
During a final campaign push for the 2019 General Elections, Governor Kashim Shettima’s massive motorcade (comprising over 100 vehicles) was ambushed between Dikwa and Gamboru Ngala. Insurgents strategically allowed the front of the long convoy—including the Governor’s armored vehicle—to pass through the village of Maula before opening fire on the rear section. The attack was launched under the cover of a thick dust storm (harmattan), which blinded security personnel and allowed the militants to isolate the tail-end vehicles
Four soldiers were shot and wounded in an ambush by members of Boko Haram in Maiduguri. The attack was a direct act of retaliation, occurring shortly after the arrest of 15 sect members during military raids on Boko Haram hideouts in the city
